The Must Have tool for hospitals !
Low-dose chest CT is one of the newest screening test being used to proactively find patients early that are at risk and are yet undiagnosed for lung cancer.
The prerequisites for patients who qualify for the CTs are very specific and clear as outlined by CMS. Marketing efforts to educate and make qualified candidates even aware of the availability of these studies can be challenging but it does not have to be.
Laser-Focus marketing to your patients of the services they need most with unbelievable accuracy!
What if in a matter of a few seconds, like a Google search, you could pull a list of existing patients (AKA customers) who are precisely and specifically qualified for these test simply by their DOB range and history of smoking ? Then create a marketing campaign that is laser focused and targeted directly to these prequalified for patients informing them they may qualify and to contact their primary care physician to further qualify them and schedule their CT.

What if you could just as precisely segment your patients by heart disease risks, diabetes, etc.. Then laser focus marketing to these segments for services you offer for conditions you know they either already have or are at high risk for.
It is a well-known sales and marketing fact that it is tremendously easier to sell to an existing customer than to a brand-new customer. Your existing patients have, by default, been prescreened whether due to their insurance, physician referral, or just patient choice to use your facilities! This is 90% of the challenge. Now you just have to show them the services you offer that will benefit them in their family.
There’s a new “Must Have” tool you need in your Healthcare IT Toolbox!
So, how do you do it? How do you find your existing patients that are prequalified in a matter of seconds? The answer, data mining!!
If you have never seen a demo of data mining then be prepared to be blown away and schedule one immediately . There are many options out there, I am mostly familiar with the product by Nuance called MPower (formerly Montage). Data mining in a nutshell is the searching of the information in your database selecting certain filters to include or exclude items from the results.
Using if-this-then-that to extract facts from your database on several criteria. For example, you can run reports to extract the radiology reports with certain terminology for specific physicians excluding certain locations for a specific date range and with a patient age range. The various reports or almost endless.
Follow up Exam Recommendations – Lost Revenue – Increased Liability -Jeopardized Patient Care!
With MPower by Nuance you will search from a Googlish looking dashboard where you can save favorite searches and utilize pre-built searches. It already has one for mammogram follow ups. MPower actually has a functionality that allows a timer to track patient medical record numbers for which the radiologist report has said recommended follow-up in so many months.
We ran a demo search based on recommended chest CT follow-up based on lung nodules. Almost instantaneously, we had a listing of studies that were recommended, how many were done, how many were not done and the lost revenue from that one CPT code. Not to mention the lost patient care and potential liability of those studies that may not have been followed up on.
Other facilities have used this same software to track the amount of time patient’s stay in the hospital post biopsy and to reduce their hospital stays by approixmately half.
Management reports – Inspection requirements – Meaningful Use
It can be used to glean required metrics on such data as critical results, Meaningful Use and other data needed for state and federal inspectors. Financial information from your HIS. The possibilities are almost endless and easily far out weigh the costs of setting up data mining software. It’s a real no-brainer and you’re losing money in potential revenue, not providing nearly the proactive patient care possible as well as inefficient means of extracting managment reports as you’re doing them now.
Do you, your staff and your company a huge favor and spend 10 minutes watching a webinar on some data mining products that are out there. As I said earlier I’m most familiar with Mpower by Nuance and can highly recommend them but I’m sure there are other good ones as well.
